The jazz tune “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” is performed by Michael Gamble on a two manual (sets of keys) harpsichord. A harpsichord differs from a piano in two significant ways. First, a piano has hammers that strike the strings while a harpsichord has quills that pluck the strings, similar to a guitarist plucking its instrument. Second, while the different manuals provide a slightly different tone and volume, the volume cannot be either increased or decreased with the lightness or intensity of striking the keys, as can be achieved with the piano – whose original name was “piano e forte” – “soft and loud.”
