From a performance on the T.A.M.I. tv show: these songs helped the “Godfather of Soul” usher in a new style in the late 1960s – a style known as “funk.” Notice the heavy musical riffs, or repeated passages, by the horn section and guitars. The grit of soul meets the driving beat and repetitious rhythmic phrases over which Brown places his authoritative vocal statements. The sound of funk moves into the ’70s with George Clinton and others as the soundtrack for black culture in America moves away from mainstream.
