Breaking through with this #1 song in 1979, the Knack paved way for the sound of New Wave bands of the ’80s.
Eventually lead singer Belinda Carlisle would break from the group to establish her solo career, but before her mid-80s departure, she was the face and main voice of the group.
Though females have been a part of rock ‘n’ roll since even before the girl groups of the early ’60s, an “all-female” band was rare. Even more rare was the successful female rock band. The Go-Go’s broke the musical glass ceiling.

The New Wave sound of the B-52s in the ’80s built on techno elements, retro costumes and hairstyles, and repetitious pop melodies and harmonies. The band’s videos were constant fare on MTV in the channel’s early years.
Devo (short for “de-evolution) was a deadpan, kitsch-filled, techno, plastic sound of the New Wave movement in the early ’80s.
At the edge of the New Wave which mainstreamed the Techno-European sound, Devo were a constant part of the MTV lineup in the early years. This video shows the synthesized, repetitious, gimmicky look of the New Wave bands.
